I felt it was the right time to share the excitement about out new Mede8er release that we have been working on. Our main goal on V4 was to implement HD Audio support for the DD+ hardware and to do our best to improve the general Mede8er experience.
We have had some huge challenges as we had to change to a new SDK (all the normal issues that come with new SDK's) and we also had no Flash memory space left on the Mede8er hardware. To resolve the Flash memory problem we built in support for HFS file system and now the code can be squashed with the net effect of a 50% space saving in the Mede8er Flash. We recognized that our network performance was not up to the market requirements and we have spend a lot of time optimizing this and squeezing every last drop out of our hardware. The improvement in network performance (streaming) is good and we will possibly have one of the better performing Realtek players in terms of network streaming.
To design a GUI that suits everyone is rather challenging and I can also add that its been a lot of weekend and late night work. I think we have more than achieved our design goals after many months of hard work I am pleased to announce that V4 GUI is really looking good.
The browse by cover art has been the highest requested Mede8er user requirement to date, so we decided to implement this functionality but we took this concept one step further. Firstly we designed the wall to be the right size from a normal viewing distance and secondly we made sure that the operational speed was acceptable even over the home network. The ability to custom map folders and shares and consolidate all of these on the wall has made its functionality rather special. We also added the bonus of being able to apply Genre artwork to each shortcut on the wall. We have even allowed for the ability to add custom Genre art to the wall. All in all a very nice experience and I am sure that most of you will enjoy this new functionality.
V4 is basically complete and just needs to pass the Alpha test stage and then it will be released to the Beta team for further testing. Unless we come across a curve ball we are hoping to be on track for a public release in September.
At this point I would like to thank Insomniac , Maasbommel and Getsko for their time spent and valuable input in getting V4 to this stage.

"Realtek 1073DD+ / 1283DD+ Explained
Starting in Spring 2010, Realtek switched production for all 1073 and 1283 chipsets to an updated version called '1073DD+' and '1283DD+'. These new chips are identical to their 'DD' predecessors except that they are now capable of passing through (bitstreaming) lossless HD Audio formats (DTS-HD MA / Dolby TrueHD).
To be clear, all 'DD' versions of the Realtek chips are capable of passing the lossy HD Audio formats such as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS. The only difference is in the ability to pass lossless audio as found on Blu-Ray discs.
Unfortunately, several of the original Realtek Media Players were advertised as capable of lossless HD Audio from launch in summer 2009. It became apparent around the end of 2009 that the original chips were never going to able to pass lossless HD-Audio. This confusion / false advertising has been covered in detail around the internet and we won't start pointing fingers here. What we will say is that the iboum site has always published the most accurate specs. We have been accurate about Realtek HD-Audio issues since late 2009.
The situation we have now with Realtek chipset players is confusing and complicated. Manufacturers are taking different approaches to the introduction of 'DD+' based players. Some are creating new products with these chips (Egreat R4A, DViCO 6600+) whilst some are simply using the new chips in existing products (ACRyan Play!On, Mede8er).
The latter approach is massively problematic if you are buying a player. There is no way of knowing which chip is in your player without opening it up and invalidating the warranty. We advise you check with the retailer first and even try to get a written guarantee that the chip is the DD+ version. It is likely many retailers won't have a clue whether they are selling the DD or DD+ version..
All players on our site that have both 'DD' and 'DD+' variations in circulation are marked DD(+) and have a paragraph linking to this page in their description.
There is further confusion because even the new 'DD+' based players can't actually pass HD-Audio with any current Realtek firmware! All the new players are waiting for an updated Realtek SDK with HD-Audio built in. The best estimate we've had for these new firmwares is August 2010.. Until then the only players with full HD-Audio support remain the ancient Sigma 8635 players (e.g Popcorn Hour A-110) or the new Sigma 864x based players (e.g. Dune 3.0, Egreat A1080, Popcorn Hour C-200)."

1) Check your Mede8er Bootloader Version in the Setup Menu.
If you have 17L go to point 2.
If you have 23 go to point 3
2) Instructions for updating from Bootloader 17L
a) Download V4beta4_17L_Bootloader_Patch_2_0ctober2010
b) Unrar/unzip the file V4beta4_17L_Bootloader_Patch_2_0ctober2010 and you will find 2 files inside.
install.img and install.dat
c) Copy these files to the root of a USB drive
d) Install via Emergency Procedure.
--- On the first stage you will see the patch install on the screen
--- then the Mede8er will reboot
--- Next you will see BETA4 install on screen and a yellow box after half of progression bar stating it has to reboot
--- then another reboot
--- then again it starts to install BETA2 and finishes with install complete and reboots
3) Instructions for updating from Bootloader 23
a) Download the file Mede8er_V4Beta4_2_October2010
b) Unrar / Unzip
b) Install in the normal way via emergency procedure

Overview of known bugs on V4 Beta based on latest Beta Version: Current version V4BETA4
1] No PCM audio on on SPDIF /Co-Ax Digital
2] On older hardware LCD led on front only changes from Red to Blue after about 5sec after switching Mede8er on from Standby (Fixed with BETA4)
3] creation of the movie, image and music folder after updating firmware or entering movie wall. This should be disabled
4] 5 sec delay before an audio file starts to play (Music Player)
5] If you use Vol Up/Down during Music Play the Player does not come back
6] .divx and bdiso not playing from movie wall
7] when in media library and press menu when focussed on a folder, then select delete. Confirm window has some layer behind that should not be there Fixed in Beta4.
8] Zoom image press info 2x and when in second info screen with picture details on the screen, return button is not working. You have to press again info button and then you are able to use Return button.
9] Dolby True HD does not always work on 1080p 60HZ when source is on USB drive or network. Need to change setting to 50hz. ------------ Awaiting audio patch file from Realtek.
10] BDMV files do not play as folder over NFS
11] when network is instable (simulate by unplugging cable) when in VideoWall browsing movie icons, mede8er hang and finally will bomb. This is not happening when doing the same in NFS network share on Video Wall

18) Fixed Screen Size Calibration issue -- if it was set at max mede8er would show image artefacts and bom with "slow" zoom nav up/down (Fixed with BETA4)
19] When adding an usb device in standby mode or hot-plug while running, USB device not seen over samba link from PC. Need to toggle NAS from ON to OFF to ON to get it visable over samba connection. When doing cold boot (starting from power off mode) with usb device attached, it is immediately visable over samba link.
20] Not able to change genre icons on page 2 and up on moviewall.(Bug introduced in BETA4)
21] Subtitles gone after FF (fixed with BETA2 27 sep 2010)
22] Skip on series in MovieWall not working. Index goes up but keeps playing first movie in series that is started. (fixed in BETA3)
23] Hebrew Subtitles issue (Fixed in BETA3]
24] subtitles play by default on video_ts folders and mkv, even though subtitles are off in settings
25] Some movies when started from video wall only have sound for a few seconds. Pausing and re-starting makes no difference but skipping forward 1 chapter and back again gives sound ok. These are full dvd rip to iso - nothing removed from original. All work ok from media library. [logged by Shamus]
26] On mede8er start up my tv gives "unsupported audio format" message - happens no matter what audio setting I use. Connected to tv by hdmi [logged by Shamus] TV is a TV Sony Bravia KLV40V550A connected HDMI
27] TV series drop down in video wall gives wrong order - eg series 1, series 2,... series10, series 11 show as series 1, series10, series 11, series 2,.... [logged by Shamus]
Note: not really a bug. You need to use naming convention 01, 02,03 etc.
28] PPPoE bug reported many times before i.e. using PPPoE causes lan ip address to change when mede8er starts and lose lan connection. [logged by Shamus]
29] When watching a MKV file with Subtitles, disable them via the remote and they stay away until pause and unpause the movie then the subtitles come back. Might be related to bug [24] (logged by Ricardo)
30] IN VIDEO WALL: while playing video, pressing INFO button will display movie info (filename, duration, codec etc), but I noticed that USB logo is displayed (top left corner) even media is on internal HDD ... This issue is not there when playing from normal File View.(logged by MarioB)
31] when playing mp3s screen saver flickers badly in some cases. The logo is ok it is the track name and artist details that flicker. (logged by Shamus)

Y2M BETA3 -- Make Great Cover Art for the Mede8er Video Wall
Hi all Mede8ers
I am proud to announce the Beta release of the new Y2M. I personally want to thank Peter Butler for his absolutely amazing work on the new Y2M. This is a world class application and it will really help take Mede8er to the next level. Now all Mede8er users will be able to make high quality cover art in one easy to use application. Also a big thanks to MarioB for the great skin.
Note
There are two version ie win32 and win64 so pls download the one that suits your operating system. Pls remember to install the latest version of Java if you don’t already have this on your PC. The Jukebox location window is the Jukebox that is going to be made so just make an empty folder on your PC or Mede8er and call it what you like and point to it. The rest is very straight forward and all you need to do is you set the path to YAMJ and set the path to folder of your Movie directory that you want to scan. Pls use the included YAMJ package as you will probably have some issues with older versions.
For those of you that have not used Yamj To Mede8er or YAMJ before we suggest you do some Googling or check the threads on this forum regarding the best naming protocol for your movies. In my experience Y2M will work very well if your movies are named with the name and the year for example "The.Day.After.Tomorrow.2004.mkv"
